About the Project

Ordnance Survey asked us to create an app which allowed users to ride the British stages of the Tour de France, while also providing a useful companion and reference tool for past and present stage routes. The OS Ride app allowed Ordnance Survey to test the demand for digital mapping services using their open source mapping API.

The popularity of cycling has exploded over the last few years and the visit of the Tour de France this year will continue to grow interest in the sport. The app aimed to position Ordnance Survey as an innovative brand within a relatively new market of cycling, while promoting relevant Ordnance Survey products such as OS Mapfinder, Get-a-Map, and paper maps. What’s more, they wanted to use this app as a brand building exercise, so we needed to produce something that would help generate PR and marketing exposure and grow the personality and credibility of Ordnance Survey as a mapping service.

The design needed to meet Ordnance Survey’s brand guidelines which outlined specific colours and fonts. We created a modern flat UI based around these guidelines that clearly presents information to users in an intuitive and easy to use interface. The design featured each stage showing a preview of the route, distance and elevation, each stage was broken down into shorter segments allowing users to choose a route that would suit their level of riding ability. The mapping and stats screens present all the information a user would expect from a similar sports tracker style app clearly showing the riders location along the route, distance they have travelled, time elapsed and elevation. Overall, the design packages each stage of the Tour de France in an appealing and easily digestible fashion, complemented by intuitive user experience that is easy to use. Essentially, we created a great looking app that doesn’t leave users guessing.

This app was developed specifically for iOS with a successful launch on the app store meeting all of Apple’s guidelines. It also had to be developed to specifically use Ordnance Survey’s mapping API. Furthermore, we developed an app allowing users to view various statistics throughout the stages such as distance covered, elevation, time elapsed and route. We also integrated the functionality for users to be able to log routes and share them with friends.

Ordnance Survey were incredibly pleased with the app, which was delivered on time and on budget. The app allowed them to successfully gain maximum exposure in national press and media, as well as procuring a celebrity endorsement partnership with Chris Boardman. Since the launch of OS Ride, Ordnance Survey have become the official mapping partner of the upcoming Tour of Britain. We are currently working with them on apps for this, so watch this space!
